5ATH-M50 review: the best closed cans I've used  Jun 02, 2008
My low-end studio equipment doesn't qualify me to give much of an opinion on such matters, but the ATH-M50s are easily the best closed cans I've ever used.

My trusty Senn 280s have served me well for several years, and I prefer them to the Sony 7506s and ATH-M40s that I've also auditioned in my studio. After reading a series of rave reviews (in Tape Op, Recording, etc.), I ordered the M50s just for comparison's sake.

I was fairly sure I'd send them back after a listen. I never did. Simply put, the M50s are the first closed cans that I feel I can trust for rough mixing, and surprisingly, the first closed cans that make me want to listen just for enjoyment. They clearly live up the street from my old Senns, which I now use solely for tracking.

PROs
* detailed yet coherent sound that mirrors higher-end monitor speakers
* particularly impressive bass response (deep, tight) and soundstage (great imaging)
* very comfy fit, with special fake leather that's breathable and durable

CONs
* rather short coiled cord, requiring an extension for some applications
* slightly looser fit than the Senn 280s (good or bad, depending on head size)

Speakers of any type are hard to recommend since tastes, physiology, and other equipment vary so much, but you may want to audition these if you need a pair for higher-end listening tasks. They work beautifully for me, and the price seems fair (paid $139 new, shipping included). Then again, with my mostly bargain-basement studio gear, what do I know? Make sure you have a good return policy, just in case.

5Very nice.  Apr 01, 2008
I don't have much to add to the rave review for these headphone--very comfortable, solid build, great sound--but I did want to add one thing. Because of the low impedance of these headphones, they can crank out some wicked volume. I hooked these up to my iPod and they are the loudest of anything that I've hooked up to it, including a number of higher-end buds. I can't imagine anyone being disapointed by these headphone, and I suspect that most will be thrilled.

5Better the the Sony MDR 7506  Feb 16, 2008
I heard these at SamAsh, slightly better than the Sony MDR 7506 which I own. I went for the Sony's as they were almost as good and less expensive. If money was no object I'd have these too. Very nice and flat, light weight, and comfortable.

5Excellent headphones! Buy them now!  Oct 31, 2007
When I first listened to these headphones, I thought they had too much lower mids. Turns out my ears were used to the sound of another pair of headphones that were deficient in that area. Now that my ears are used to the sound of the ATH-M50's, I find them to be incredibly accurate headphones. The music sounds organic, not synthetic and hyped. You really feel like you are there in person. All the frequencies are reproduced flawlessly, from the deepest bass I've ever heard to the clinically accurate mids and highs. Not a hint of harshness anywhere on these babies. They are comfortable to wear for someone with a big head like myself. I wish the cord was 5 feet longer though. You really have to shop around for the best deal on these though, as some websites have them close to $200 a pair, which is crazy. I got mine through Amazon for a much friendlier price. These are the best headphones I've ever owned.

5excellent monitor headphones  May 30, 2007
I just received these in an order, and they're fantastic! Reasonably compact (they fold into an included, small sack), they provide excellent sound isolation and a great range of bass, mid, and hi tones. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my next door neighbor was just using a jackhammer (to remove a section of driveway and install sprinkler piping), and I first tested these headphones with that much noise in the background. They are great!
