Features
  • The main absorber has 4 formed pieces of state-of-the-art specialist acoustic absorptive material attached to its face via the extended separation rods, which further serve to absorb and then diffuse the sound waves as they pass to the main filter.

  • The stand assembly comprises a mic stand clamp fitting, which attaches by means of a vertical joint to the horizontal bar assembly onto which both the Reflexion Filter, and any standard fitting shock mount can be fixed.

  • The various layers both absorb and diffuse the sound waves hitting them, so progressively less of the original source acoustic energy passes through each layer.

Description

The sE Electronics Reflexion Filter is portable. It's innovative. It's versatile. It uses state of the art materials. It works, and its a fraction of the price of acoustically treating your studio environment! With the RF you can bring acoustic treatment with you wherever you need it and improve your recordings. Its shape and size have been carefully tested to maximize absorption, while leaving the microphones polar pattern unaffected. The mounting setup attaches to any microphone stand via a clamp fitting, with an additional assembly allowing the microphone to be moved both vertically and horizontally along the bar. The Reflexion Filter itself can be moved vertically to "tune" for the optimum desired absorption. Recommended for: Vocals, Reeds, Horns, Guitar, Voice Over, Percussion, Live/Location mics. The Reflexion Filter works by reducing the amount of acoustic energy hitting untreated walls and other surfaces so there is less of the original source reflected back as unwanted room ambience to the mic. Sound reflections are progressively reduced in strength after passing through seven layers: 1. Punched Aluminum for diffusing sound waves2. Sound-absorptive wool3. Aluminum Foil breaking up lower frequency wave-forms4. An air gap acting as an acoustic barrier5. More sound-absorptive wool6. Another layer of punched aluminum7. Four formed panels of state-of-the-art specialized acoustic absorptive material separated from the main unit via a small air gap.

2Decent Results, but overpriced and slightly overrated  Apr 28, 2011 By Stephen Marley
The SE Electronics Reflexion Filter gives home and location recordists a decent amount of control over unwanted ambient sound in a compact package. At $150-$175 this unit would be well worth it, but at $300, I'd like to see a more robust stand mount, slightly larger surface area and a better counter balanced approach to rigging. First the sound... I use the Reflexion in my small project studio to help isolate soloists, mostly horns, on small combo jazz tracks. I don't have a soundproof vocal booth - just a 13' x 25' open studio with moveable acoustic partitions for isolation. Typically, we record live jazz performances and run the upright bass, electric piano or guitars direct, plus a second channel for each instrument that's mic'd. Since drums are played in the same room, there was a problem with too much bleed into the sax or trumpet players mic. Vocals, of course, were even more problematic. By using the Reflexion, I'm able to get much better isolation and clean up the tracks for superior control during mixdown. However, I find that one must also place a acoustic foam baffle behind the soloist to block reflected sound from behind the player/vocalist - the SE parabola just doesn't knock it down far enough by itself. In a relatively small space, the Reflexion doesn't block drum set sounds sufficiently, unless you surround the kit with additional foam barriers and/or plexiglass shields... then the SE Electronics Reflexion can get you in the ball park for ambient control, and will slightly improve isolation on "softer" vocal tracks.
It actually works better on stage, where the small parabolic surface doesn't visually interfere with the musicians eye contact with other players and the audience as much as other devices would. Horn players don't object to blowing into one of these units and it will surely improve live recordings in this situation.
Finally, the "C clamp" mounting doesn't hold the filter, rigging and most studio condenser mics that well - the unit tends to tilt and sag. More importantly, it is not a well-balanced device and that requires you mount it on a heavyweight mic stand, or use sand bags at the base to prevent having the whole rig and an expensive mic crash to the floor... use caution.

FOLLOW-UP The more I use this device, the more I dislike the mounting arrangement. It only gets looser and less secure the longer you own it... took it from three stars (it works fine) down to two because of the poor mounting clamps and top heavy design.

5Really takes the 'edge' off.  Nov 10, 2009 By Harlan Hogan "hhogan"
In my home studio I record in a Whisper Room, which is a terrific sound booth. However, due to it's relatively small size I did hear a boxy quality especially when working a louder volume. The filter works as claimed and smoothed out the 'rough edges' so to speak - highly reccomended!

3Good.... but the price no so good.  Feb 01, 2011 By Unbridled Fate
I purchased one of these from zounds and I kept it for a week then returned it. It sounded fine, it looked great but I just didn't feel it was worth 300bucks! I guess others felt the same way too because I see these things forsale 2nd hand on ebay all the time.

What I like about the filter is that it does make your voice sound really dry. But don't be mislead this dryness effect also varies by where you are originally recording your vocals. I found this out as I placed the unit in several locations around my studio apartment. So it's not a 100% guarantee that it's going to sound great without you having to do some Mic work.

Another thing I liked about the filter is that it's really adjustable and you can place it into lots of positions till it topples over! I don't think anything had me as nervous as seeing this 300 dollar filter hit my floor but luckily I caught it before it did. The stand itself could use some more work on SE's behalf but I suggest caution when setting this thing up.

Ultimately in the time I used the filter I realized I could probably get the same desired effect for cheaper and that's what I sought after. Eventually after some research on google I found an inexpensive reflection filter called the AE-F made by Soundkitz and that's what I ended up using. It gives my vocal range the dryness I was looking for and has really been pulling its weight in my studio. I really do enjoy using it but just be warned it's main difference is that it connects itself directly to your stand so that if your using a boom mic you might have to do some rigging up.

I really can't say this SE filter is a bad product because it isn't it's just more expensive than it should be. I also saw that there's a watered down version of it that they made but I skipped that because the AE-F reflection filter I got was even half of that price.

5As necessary as a good mic and preamp  Feb 19, 2012 By Nashville Don
As a marginal singer, I am forever in search of a vocal chain that makes me sound "not terrible." First I went in search of a mic, and ended up with the Blue Blueberry and Miktek C5 (great vocal as well as acoustic guitar mic). Next I went in search of a preamp, and ended up with the BAE 1073mpf (class A -- for vocals you don't want "prosumer" class AB, you need one with a big, honkin' power supply for that smooth, professional sound). Each of the above was a huge improvement over my previous vocal chain(s). Then I was told by a pro that you need a dead-silent space for the vocal mic, so I got this. Big improvement! I'm getting a very clear, present vocal without weird overtones that come from the room and smear all over the mix. Thank you SE Electronics!

4Sounds Great....Buildability...questionable.  Dec 09, 2011 By A. Fetterman "Hippy Chick"
Great product. Does exactly what it claims. Improvement of sound - without a doubt.
Very sturdy product, but it is extremely heavy and difficult to mount on standard, high quality mic/boom stand.
We use top of the line AKG stands and booms and the set-up is tenuous at best.
We would recommend very large Atlas stands for a more sturdy fit and finish - though these aren't always practical in small, residential studio settings.
