Dan Lenard left broadcasting in 2004 to become a full-time voice-over performer. He soon discovered that many voice actors were having trouble setting-up a personal studio and recording professional quality audio. Dan began consulting and teaching as: 'The Home Studio Master.'

From Randy Anderson on the VO: 1-A:" .... Rick Gordon was the one that told me to go for the mic, I recently joined Commercial Voices and had a conversation with him. A vocal coach I was working with (Terri Apple) said try different mics until you get a sound you think is a good reflection of my voice. I do like this mic and as I said I plan on using for all work."

The Voice Over Microphone™ 'Bake-off!'
When we asked VO: 1-A owners what they thought of their new mic we got more than we bargained for! "We're lovin' it" was the most common reaction and several people sent recordings along comparing the VO: 1-A to mics much more - expensive. Here's s a side-by-side comparison of the VO: 1-A to three very popular industry standard microphones. Listen and you decide!

A half hour after unpacking his brand-new VO: 1-A, voice actor Brian Haymond made this recording comparing The Voice Over Microphone™ to his Sennheiser MKH416.
"The comparison proved exactly what I had hoped. ... The VO-1A from Harlan Hogan & MXL has superb quality and it fills a void in my arsenal very well. As a matter of fact, my plan is to now use the VO-1A for all my narration & eLearning projects...it's that good."

I'm lovin' the VO: 1-A!
This mic is like a combintion of the warmth of my Elctrovoice RE-20 and the crispness of my AKG C3000b all in one.
Plus, I always had to EQ the RE-20 to achieve the brightness that your mic naturally has!

George Whittam is a highly respected audio engineer and owner of ElDorado Recording Services. He's designed personal recording studios for many Hollywood voice celebrities. George gave VO: 1-A perhaps the ultimate test, pitting it against the venerable and expensive Neumann U87.
"The VO: 1-A's response is almost identical to my ear across nearly the entire frequency spectrum. The physical construction of the microphone is quite impressive, and consisent with the quality we've come to expect from MXL, giveing their German counterparts a run for their money."

What makes the VO: 1-A THE Voice Over MicrophoneTM?
Simple. The VO: 1-A was designed from the outset to be a microphone tailored to the unque needs of voice over recording.
For example, although the VO: 1-A is a cardioid condenser mic, MXL subtly adjusted its polar pattern to veer toward omnidirectional. This produces a more controllable proximity effect than a typical 'all-purpose' cardioid microphone. As Steve Cunningham pointed out in his Radio and Production Magazine review of the VO: 1-A, "The low-end is present and certainly meaty enough for 'Big Voice' male voiceover, but the proximity effect was not nearly as pronounced as I had expected it to be. ... This is not to say that the VO:1-A has no proximity effect. It will - in fact - get suitably big if you get right up on the capsule. I would instead say that it’s probably more forgiving for inexperienced talent who haven't yet mastered the use and control of proximity."
Another difference is the quality of the electronic components. Inside, the components are interconnected with the finest wire in the world, Mogami® and the diaphram is sputtered with gold. The VO: 1-a uses bi-polar transisters to create phantom power and a pair of JFET transisters for class-A Amplification, instead of the cheaper op amps widely used for amplification in most microphones in this price range. JFET transistors - although more expensive - mimic the sound of tube amplification giving a wonderful warmth to the spoken word.
Knowing that most voice over performers aren't 'gear heads' and don't have a closet full of audio gear we included everything they would need top get to work immediately, including a professional shock mount and a Marshall Electronics microphone cable.
Most importantly, Harlan Hogan's Signature microphone is true to his firm belief that only by trying a microphone on your own voice can you decide if it's going to be your mic of choice. Uniquely, the VO: 1-A is only sold with a no-questions-asked money back guarantee.
Design, quality electronics, superb construction and an 'Audition and then Decide' sales policy. That's what makes the VO: 1-A - THE Voice Over Microphone™!
